Chief Election Commissioners Of Pakistan
As of August 2025, Sikandar Sultan Raja is the serving Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Pakistan, continuing in the role despite his five-year term officially ending in January 2025. This was made possible by the 26th Constitutional Amendment, which allows the CEC and Election Commission members to remain in office until a successor is appointed.
Current situation
- Term extension: Sikandar Sultan Raja’s five-year term expired on January 26, 2025. Under normal circumstances, his tenure would have ended then. However, a constitutional amendment passed in late 2024 permits the CEC and members to continue serving indefinitely until a replacement is chosen.
- Appointment process: The process to appoint a new CEC is initiated by the Prime Minister in consultation with the Leader of the Opposition. In June 2025, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif invited Leader of the Opposition Omar Ayub to begin consultations, but no agreement on nominees has been reached.
- Constitutional deadline passed: The constitutional deadline for filling the vacancy is 45 days after the position becomes vacant. However, this deadline was exceeded in March 2025 without a new appointment, and the parliamentary committee responsible for confirmation had not been formed as of that time.
- Controversies: Raja’s extended tenure and the delay in appointing a successor have drawn criticism, particularly following the highly contentious 2024 general election
Key Chief Election Commissioners in Pakistan’s history

- Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan: Appointed in 2014, he presided over the 2018 general election.
- Sikandar Sultan Raja: A retired bureaucrat appointed in January 2020. His tenure has been marked by controversy, particularly surrounding the 2024 general election.
