If you are a US passport holder planning to visit Pakistan in 2026, this guide walks you through the exact visa process, required documents, fees, and approval timeline. Pakistan does not offer visa-free entry or a walk-up Visa on Arrival to American citizens. The good news is that the process is entirely online, and most applicants complete it from home without visiting an embassy or consulate.
Yes. All US passport holders require a visa to enter Pakistan. There is no visa-free arrangement, no bilateral exemption, and as of January 1, 2026 no Visa on Arrival at the airport. The Visa Prior to Arrival (VPA) programme, which offered free fast-track visas to US citizens and 125 other nationalities from August 2024, was suspended without a public announcement effective January 1, 2026.
2026 POLICY UPDATE: The VPA (Visa Prior to Arrival) free visa programme has been suspended. Americans who planned to use VPA must now apply for a standard paid Tourist eVisa at visa.nadra.gov.pk. There is currently no official guidance on whether VPA will return.

Pay the Visa Fee
The fee is integrated directly into the application. US citizens pay USD 60 for a standard single-entry tourist visa. 9. Arriving in Pakistan — What to Expect at Immigration
Entering Pakistan as a US tourist on an eVisa is a straightforward process at the three major international airports (Islamabad ISB, Lahore LHE, Karachi KHI). Here is what to expect on arrival.
Documents to Carry (physical copies required)
Printed Visa Grant Notice this is mandatory; digital copies on your phone may not be accepted
Original US passport with at least 6 months validity remaining
Completed Passenger Arrival Card (handed out on the aircraft or available at immigration)

The Immigration Process
Proceed to the Foreign Nationals immigration queue. An FIA (Federal Investigation Agency) officer will verify your Visa Grant Notice, passport, and biometric data. Biometric fingerprint scanning is standard procedure for most foreign nationals. The officer will confirm your permitted length of stay and may stamp your maximum stay dates into your passport. Processing at immigration typically takes 15–30 minutes during normal travel periods.
Permitted Stay
A single-entry tourist visa allows a stay of up to 90 days from the date of entry unless the immigration officer stamps a shorter duration. You cannot exceed the permitted stay stamped in your passport. If you need more time, apply for an extension before your current visa expires.

11. Travel Safety Considerations for US Citizens
The US State Department currently rates Pakistan at Level 3 Reconsider Travel, with Level 4 Do Not Travel advisories for Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and areas near the Line of Control. Areas popular with tourists including Islamabad, Lahore, and Gilgit-Baltistan (Hunza, Skardu) are not under Level 4 restrictions and have strong track records for tourist safety.
How long does a Pakistan visa take for US citizens?
Processing takes up to 7 business days under standard conditions. During peak periods such as summer travel season or Ramadan, processing can extend to 14 business days. Apply at least 3–4 weeks before your travel date to allow for any unexpected delays or correction requests.
Can Americans get a Visa on Arrival in Pakistan?
No. As of January 1, 2026, Pakistan has suspended the Visa on Arrival for US citizens and most other nationalities. You must apply for an eVisa and receive your Visa Grant Notice before departing the United States. Airlines will require this documentation before you board.
How much is the Pakistan tourist visa fee for US passport holders?
USD 60 for a single-entry tourist visa (up to 3 months). Multiple-entry long-term visas cost approximately USD 120 or more. All fees are non-refundable and paid by Visa or Mastercard credit/debit card through the NADRA portal. Source:
Pakistan Online Visa System (visa.nadra.gov.pk).
Is Pakistan safe for US travelers?
The US State Department rates Pakistan at Level 3 overall with Level 4 zones in Balochistan, most of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and areas near the Line of Control. Popular tourist regions including Islamabad, Lahore, Hunza, and Skardu are not under Level 4 restrictions and are considered significantly safer. Always check the current

before and during your trip.
Can I extend my Pakistan tourist visa while inside the country?
Yes. You can apply for a visa extension through the same NADRA portal
visa.nadra.gov.pk
while you are still in Pakistan and your visa is still valid. Extensions allow up to an additional 6 months. You cannot apply for an extension after your visa has expired an exit permit would then apply.
Do I need an invitation letter to get a Pakistan tourist visa?
For tourist visa applications, you need either a confirmed hotel booking or a host’s invitation letter accompanied by a copy of the host’s Pakistani ID (CNIC or NICOP). If you are staying in hotels throughout your trip, a booking confirmation is sufficient. If staying with family or friends, an invitation letter is required.
Can I apply for an urgent or expedited Pakistan visa?
The standard Pakistan eVisa system does not offer a formally designated ‘urgent’ processing tier as of 2026. Some third-party visa services claim expedited handling, but the Government of Pakistan itself does not guarantee faster processing for a premium fee. Plan early to avoid last-minute issues.
Can US–Pakistan dual citizens apply through the eVisa system?
No. Dual nationals with Pakistani citizenship are not eligible for the standard eVisa. Individuals with Pakistani origin including those with a Pakistani parent, grandparent, or prior Pakistani citizenship must apply through a different process and should consult the nearest Pakistani consulate or review the Family Visit Visa category on the
NADRA portal.
What happens if my Pakistan visa application is rejected?
If your application is rejected, you can reapply. The fee is non-refundable for the rejected application. Review the specific reason provided (if stated) and correct any documentary or information errors before submitting a fresh application with a new fee payment. If the reason is unclear, contact the Pakistan Online Visa System support team at
visa.nadra.gov.pk/contact.
What should I do if I lose my Visa Grant Notice inside Pakistan?
Log back into the NADRA portal at
visa.nadra.gov.pk
using your registered email and download a fresh copy of your Visa Grant Notice. If you are unable to access the portal, contact the nearest FIA immigration office or the NADRA support team for assistance.
Applying for a Pakistan tourist visa as a US citizen is a manageable, fully online process provided you prepare your documents carefully, double-check every entry against your passport, and apply well ahead of your travel date.
